As a pet parent, it is your responsibility to know everything that relates to your dog’s health.
Part of that responsibility is knowing how often, and how much you should feed your pet.
Since there are numerous reasons you should consider when thinking of your pet’s current diet, it’s equally important to have a decent understanding of their needs. With their food intake proving crucial to their health, you as a pet owner can be the difference between their healthy lifestyle and a potentially harmful feeding practice in the long run.
In this feature, we are going to talk about the proper servings of pet food for your dog, how you can identify the right amount for their specific breed, and other pet food-related concerns you may have in mind.
Let’s get right to it!
How Often Should My Dog Eat?
Some of the factors that you want to look into when deciding how often you should feed them are their breed, age, size, and even their energy levels.
According to the American Kennel Club, dogs should generally be fed twice a day.
Considering your dog’s nutrition and diet and applying them on a daily basis help ensure that your dog can squeeze in all the years he possibly can in his lifetime.
Portions
Arguably, meal portion size should be given more consideration than the actual frequency of the meals.
For dogs under 10 pounds, it’s ideal to feed them 1/3 cup per day (if they weigh 3 pounds), and 1/2 cup (if they weigh 6 pounds).
For dogs who weigh between 10 to 20 pounds, you should feed them 3/4 cup a day (if they weigh 10 pounds), 1cup per day (if they weigh 15 pounds), and 1 2/3 cups a day (if they weigh 20 pounds).
For dogs who weigh between 30 to 50 pounds, there is a slight change in average food intake. Dogs who weigh 30 pounds should eat 1 3/4 cups per day. Dogs who weigh 40 pounds ideally should be eating 2 1/4 cups per day. For dogs who weigh 50 pounds, then it’s recommended for them to eat 2 2/3 cups a day.
Lastly, for large dogs who weigh 60 – 100 + pounds, their food intake recommendations do increase. For dogs who weigh 60 pounds, it’s recommended to feed them 3 cups per day. For dogs who weigh 70 pounds, feed them 3 1/2 cups a day. For dogs who weigh 80 pounds, feed them 3 3/4 cups a day. For dogs who weigh 90 pounds, feed then 4 1/4 cups a day. For dogs who weigh 100 pounds, feed them 4 1/2 cups a day, and add an extra 1/3 cup for every 10 pounds if they weigh above 100 pounds.
The Matter At Hand
So after discussing all the recommended intake amounts, it’s time to address the topic – how many cups are there in a pound of dog food?
Generally, 1 pound has just over three cups of dog food.
This leads us to the conclusion of being always mindful of our dog’s food diet. After all, exercise, a balanced daily meal, and a positive living experience is often key to a prolonged happy pooch life!
